I need to tell you about a man named Andy Meakins.

November 23, 1996.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961.

Three drunk hijackers with a bottle of liquor they claimed was a bomb.

Andy was heading home to England after years serving with Tear Fund in Ethiopia. The hijackers demanded to fly to Australia. The pilots tried explaining they didn't have enough fuel to make it halfway there.

Nobody listened.

Four hours into the ordeal, the left engine sputtered and died.

Captain Leul Abate came over the intercom: "We have no fuel. We have lost the left engine and we are about to lose the right. Prepare for a crash landing."

The cabin erupted. People screaming. Children crying. Adults vomiting from fear.

At 21,000 feet, the second engine failed.

The 150-ton aircraft was now gliding—falling at 2,000 feet per minute toward the Indian Ocean.

That's when something extraordinary happened.

Andy Meakins unbuckled his seatbelt and stood up.

In a plane plummeting toward certain death, with people shrieking in terror around him, this 43-year-old civil engineer turned missionary did what most of us wouldn't do in a church pew:

He preached the Gospel.

"Many of us might die in this crash," he called out over the chaos. "So there's something you need to know."

For the next twenty minutes, as that plane fell from the sky, Andy moved from section to section explaining the Gospel with urgency and simplicity.

Sin. Death. Jesus. Cross. Forgiveness. Eternal life.

Basic. Essential. Life-saving truth.

A flight attendant heard his words, bowed her head, and asked Jesus to forgive her sins right there in the aisle.

Witnesses said at least twenty people cried out to God for salvation as that plane descended.

Twenty souls.

In twenty minutes.

While falling to their deaths.

Andy was still on his feet preaching when Flight 961 hit the water at 200 mph.

Of the 175 people aboard, 125 died in the crash—including Andy.

But here's what gets me:

Andy didn't waste those final moments cursing God, crying for his mother, or curled up in panic like most of us would.

He spent his last breath throwing lifelines to drowning souls.

That's what real Christianity looks like.
